| F. Alonso wins in Japan and now leads with 10 pts advantage |
|
| |
F. Alonso wins the Japanese Grand Prix after starting from 5th place. After the first pits F. Alonso found himself 5 seconds behind M. Schumacher and this part of the race was very exciting seeing both drivers giving the most.
It was only 17laps from the end of the race when F. Alonso sees his hopes fly high after a white cloud came out of M. Schumacher, exactly to the contrary of the race in Monza.
Alonso now only needs 1 point to confirm his second world title. G. Fisichella's third place behin F. Massa gives a bigger margin to the Renault's team in the constructors Championship.

| Flavio Briatore has renewed his contract with Renault |
|
| |
The Renault F1 Team is delighted to announce that Managing Director Flavio Briatore, 56, has renewed his contract for the 2007 and 2008 seasons.
Furthermore, Briatore has reconfirmed the current technical management structure, which has championship-winning credentials. This will ensure continuity at the team's technical centres of Enstone (UK) and Viry-Châtillon (FR) under the respective leadership of Bob Bell and Pat Symonds, and André Lainé and Rob White. This stability will be crucial as the team adapts to significant short-term technical changes: the transition to a single tyre supplier from 2007, the introduction of homologated engines and the brand new Technical Regulations that will come into force in 2008.

|
| |
no changes to the current engines will be allowed after this year's Chinese Grand Prix. These will be the engines used in 2007 and beyond
2008 will see the introduction of a 19,000 rpm rev limit
starting in 2009, regulations will promote fuel-efficiency, including energy recovery and re-use (i.e., regenerative braking systems)
down the road, the GPMA, the FIA and engine suppliers will work to define possible new rules that allow a performance advantage to be gained by means of more efficient use of energy. (Alternative powerplants are a possibility.)

Williams will be introducing some engine and fuel upgrades at Magny Cours on Next Sunday's French Grand Prix.
Petrobras' Formula One fuel, the 17-PodiumF1, will compliment the new Series 6.01 engine specification.
Designed by engineers and chemists from the company’s Refineries and the R&D Centre (CENPES), 17-PodiumF1 is derived from Brazilian crude oils and is processed at Petrobras' refining units.
The aim of the new product is to increase the power generated by the engine in certain revolution ranges and, at the same time, to improve fuel economy. Other than reducing lap times by precious tenths of seconds and increasing fuel efficiency, the new fuel will additionally help to reduce pit stops times and offer the team’s engineers greater flexibility in terms of race strategy.
The partnership between Petrobras and the WilliamsF1 Team commenced in 1998 and is now regarded as one of the most enduring in motorsport.

| Nürburgring from a technical perspective |
|
| |
As a rhythmic, undulating track, each 5.148 kilometre lap of the 60 lap European Grand Prix will see the drivers negotiate eight left and eight right hand corners, a complete mix of slow, medium and high speed turns, joined by several straights. Following the extensive re-modeling, the Nürburgring invariably promotes some great overtaking, particularly in the stadium section and at the exit of the final chicane upon entering the first corner. Unpredictable weather conditions common to the mountainous Eifel region can also impact the outcome of the European Grand Prix.

Qualifying
The 2005 race weekend will feature one qualifying session on Saturday afternoon and another on Sunday morning.
The first session will run from 1300 to 1400 on Saturday and will, as in 2004, be single lap qualifying, with the cars going out in the reverse order of their finishing positions at the previous race.
The second session, from 1000 to 1100 on Sunday, will also use the single lap format, with the cars going out in the reverse order of the qualifying on Saturday (i.e. the fastest car on Saturday runs last on Sunday).
The cars will run on Saturday with unrestricted fuel. They will then go into parc ferme after this qualifying session and for the Sunday qualifying session they will run with race fuel, having been allowed to refuel before the second qualifying session. They will not be allowed to refuel again before the race starts.
The times of the two sessions will be aggregated to determine the grid, with the shortest aggregate time in pole position.
Tyres
Drivers will have access to far fewer tyres in 2005 and will have to make a single set last through both qualifying sessions and the entire race. A tyre can only be changed during this time if it is punctured or damaged.
On Fridays, drivers will be able to test two different dry tyre compounds. Ahead of Saturday practice they must choose one of these for the remainder of the weekend. They will then be allocated three sets of this compound – one will be used in practice, one in qualifying and the race, and one kept in reserve in case of punctures or accident damage.
These changes will require harder compounds than in 2004 and will force drivers to drive with tyre preservation in mind. The knock-on effects will be slower lap times and much-revised race strategies.
Drivers will also have access to wet and extreme-weather tyres. These can only be used when the track is declared wet by the race director.
Engines
In 2004 engines had to last one race weekend. From 2005 they must last two – equivalent to a distance of around 1,500 kilometres (close to 1000 miles). If a driver requires an engine change ahead of qualifying, he will drop ten places on the grid for that race. If an engine is changed between the start of qualifying and the race the driver will be put to the back of the grid.
In both instances the driver concerned must use his new engine for the remainder of that meeting and the entire following grand prix weekend. If a driver fails to finish a race, he may start the next meeting with a new engine without penalty.
With even greater reliability required from the engines, these changes are likely to cut rev limits and power outputs, hence reducing car performance.
Aerodynamics
Aerodynamic regulations have been dramatically revised in a bid to reduce downforce and hence cut performance. The key changes are a higher nose and front wing section, a changed rear diffuser profile, and the bringing forward of the rear wing structure.
Initial estimates suggest that the changes could cut downforce by as much as 25 percent over 2004. Designers are likely to claw much of this back as their 2005 machines evolve, but slower laps times and trickier-handling cars would seem inevitable.

| McLaren will run third car in 2005 |
|
| |
The McLaren team have confirmed that they intend to take full advantage of the rule that allows them to use a third car in Friday practice sessions this season.
Under the FIA regulations any team that finished outside the top four in the previous year’s constructors’ championship may run an additional chassis. McLaren were fifth in 2004, making them eligible for the first time.
The third car, which BAR used to great effect last season on their way to second in the championship, could be even more of an asset this year thanks to more stringent engine regulations which limit each driver to one engine for every two race weekends.

| Ferrari Dominate Friday Qualifying Session |
|
| |
He was only seventh fastest in the morning's first timed practice session, but when it came to qualifying in Sepang this afternoon Michael Schumacher was once more unstoppable for Ferrari and Bridgestone.
As the track temperature see-sawed from an initial 43 degrees to 50, and then dropped mid-session as low as 42, the world champion lapped in 1m 34.980s comfortably eclipsing the previous efforts of an overly cautious David Coulthard, Alonso and Trulli in their Renaults, Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher in the BMW Williamses, and Jenson Button in the BAR Honda.
Rubens Barrichello was the last man out as the drivers went out in world championship standings order this time, and just to rub it in, the Ferrari driver slotted into second place at the last moment with a lap of 1m 35.681s.
"Both drivers were on the same tyre specification and the key was to get a good tyre and car set-up here," said Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn. "Track conditions change a lot here and it's a bit of a moving target."
Michelin motorsport director Pierre Dupasquier admitted that tyre choice is very difficult here. "Two of our tyres have very similar performance, the third is absolutely new."
"I'm quite happy with my car," Montoya said. "Ferrari are still quite a bit ahead but it is some comfort being ahead of both McLarens."

| Entry fee may be abolished |
|
| |
Reports suggest that the $48 million Formula 1 entry fee might be reduced or even abolished in order to attract more teams to the grid.
Max Mosley, president of the FIA, has suggested the fee change in response to a reduction in the number of teams in recent years. The fee was introduced in 1999 to ensure that the teams wanting to enter into Formula 1 are organised properly with the relevant funding but many believe that the fee is too much of an obstacle for new teams, particularly independent teams, who want to enter the sport.
Mosley said “The 48 million was to stop new teams coming along and saying ‘I want an entry’ and then going around looking for a sponsor. If somebody serious came along now, everybody could agree to reduce the sum of money or eliminate it completely.”

| Ron Dennis and Frank Williams write to Max Mosley |
|
| |
McLaren and Williams directors don't agree with many changes that FIA president Max Mosley is proposing in the rules for Formula 1.
They accuse that these changes will kill the enthusiasm in Formula 1, and the excellence in technology that F1 gained in the past 20 years.
The letter says that the two major factors that are killing F1 is the domination of Ferrari and the world economic slowdown. Despite of this, F1 still leaves a more than sustainable profit, as opposition to the crisis image FIA is giving to F1.

| G. Fisichella completes Valencia programme |
|
| |
Giancarlo Fisichella ended Jordan Ford’s four-day test in Valencia by completing 63 laps with a best time of 1:11.83.
Although today’s running was hampered by minor problems including a water leak the team accomplished a significant amount of engine testing and worked to further improve the balance of the EJ13. This week’s test saw the team complete 241 laps of the Spanish track, gathering considerable data on the new chassis and Ford Cosworth RS engine.
Attention now switches to Barcelona on Monday where Fisichella and new team mate Ralph Firman will test alongside each other in a pair of Jordan Ford chassis for the first time.

Teams are going on with the testing of their new cars and strategies. With the new rules and regulations recently introduced for 2003, the drivers will have some tough decisions to make especially as they will have to start Sunday's race on the same amount of fuel left in the car after qualifying (the Sunday warmup should disappear).
We see Ferrari are doing strong with M. Schumacher getting even better records with the new F2003, while we see J-P. Montoya going really fast in his new Williams.

| Ferrari finish 2002 in style |
|
| |
Ferrari completed their 2002 season in style as Michael Schumacher led home Rubens Barrichello for another scarlet one-two in Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka.
Jordan had reason to celebrate too as Takuma Sato took fifth place in his home race to score his first world championship points. It lifted the team above BAR and Jaguar to sixth in the constructors' standings.
Kimi Raikkonen finished third for McLaren, benefiting from the retirement of Ralf Schumacher in the closing laps. Juan Pablo Montoya gave Williams some consolation with fourth place, while Jenson Button took the final point in his last race for Renault.
The Ferrari pair led away from the front row and quickly began to pull away from their Williams and McLaren rivals. Schumacher had the advantage over Barrichello throughout the 53-lap race before slowing on the closing laps to win by half a second, with Raikkonen a further 23 seconds down the road.
It was the world champion's 11th win of the year, and he becomes the first driver ever to finish every race in a season on the podium. Ferrari's one-two also means they have scored as many points this year as the other ten teams put together.
"The results talk for themselves," said Schumacher of his record-breaking season. "It is fantastic. What is amazing is we have finished all the races, which shows the quality of the job the mechanics have done.
"Today has been a special day with two winners - we won the race and the Japanese fans saw Sato take his first points at his home GP.
"The major point is you get a good start and gap to plan your race and that was the only plan honestly. I have been very fast all weekend, and it is no surprise we pulled out the gap to the others. I now look forward to a nice winter and preparing for next year."
Schumacher and Barrichello are now the most successful partnership in the history of Formula One™, surpassing that of David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen at McLaren.
"I am so happy for myself and Ferrari," said Barrichello. "Being part of such a family is incredible. I had a good start, but the car was bottoming out a little on the first few laps so I had to be careful.
"It has been a good season, and two wins in the last three races was special for me."
Ralf Schumacher was running in third for most of the race after getting the jump on Raikkonen at the start. But with less than five laps to go he pulled off at the crossover with an apparent engine failure.
It left a grateful Raikkonen to take the final podium position for McLaren, after experiencing some problems in the closing stages. The Finn had earlier survived a scary moment on lap 33 when he ran wide at Degner, almost losing control.
Of his fourth podium of the season, the Finn commented: "Before the pit stop I was quicker than Ralf, but then he ran longer than me and was able to stay in front.
"We had some kind of problem that saw me slow down on the back straight, but when I came to the chicane everything was normal again."
McLaren team mate Coulthard had started the race strongly, maintaining his third place in the opening laps. However, he slowed on lap eight and pulled into the pits to retire.
"There was a huge loss of power," he said. "I don't know what it was, probably electronics. It was disappointing, but there was nothing we could do. We were going well."
There was nothing but smiles at Jordan as Sato brought a difficult debut season to close with his first points. The Japanese fans gave him a standing ovation as he exited the cockpit. It followed some tense final laps after the team had seen their other driver, Giancarlo Fisichella, retire with an engine failure on lap 39. The Italian had been forced to start in the spare after a last-minute engine problem on his way to the grid.
Honda rivals BAR had a very disappointing day, recording a double DNF at their 2003 engine supplier's home race. Olivier Panis, in his final race for the team, started to slow on lap six, dropping to last before pitting. He was sent back out, but after a further visit to the pits eventually came in to retire on lap 14.
"I don't know what it was, but there was a big power loss," said the Frenchman. "The gearbox felt tight, so it was possibly gearbox or engine - I don't know."
Team mate Jacques Villeneuve lost out at the start, but was putting Fisichella under intense pressure for 11th place in the middle stint, even forcing the Italian to run wide at the chicane at one point. However, his engine let go as he entered the home straight on lap 29. Something locked at the rear of the car and he was lucky not to be pitched into the pit wall.
Nick Heidfeld finished seventh for Sauber after a relatively uneventful race. Team mate Felipe Massa was the first of the day's retirements on lap four. The Brazilian ran wide into the gravel at Degner, before lightly hitting the tyre wall.
Both Renaults were quick throughout the race. Jarno Trulli and Jenson Button raced side by side on the opening lap, with Trulli moving ahead. Both then looked to be faster than Sato's Jordan ahead, but were unable to find a way past.
Trulli's hopes of a top-six finish ended on lap 34 when he pulled off with technical problems, leaving Button to bring Renault a single point, as he eventually finished 19 seconds down on Sato.
With Allan McNish being advised not to race after his qualifying crash, Mika Salo was Toyota's sole runner and he brought them a top-ten finish, in eighth, in their first home Grand Prix. The Finn had been in contention with Fisichella and Villeneuve, but lost a place to the Jordan in the second round of pit stops.
Eddie Irvine came from 14th on the grid to come home ninth, bringing a disappointing weekend for Jaguar to an end. Team mate Pedro de la Rosa retired on lap 41, pulling off at the hairpin with technical problems. It ended the team's hopes of retaining sixth place in the constructors' championship as Sato's two points put Jordan ahead.
Minardi's Mark Webber was the last of ten drivers to make the finish at Suzuka. Team mate Alex Yoong ended his final race for the team in retirement on lap 16 when he spun off into the gravel at Turn 2. He had got past Webber at the start, but lost the place when he spun and recovered at the hairpin.
All drivers were on a two-stop strategy. Such was the pace of the Ferraris that Schumacher never dropped below second place, even as he rejoined after his first visit to the pits. His win gave tyre suppliers Bridgestone their 70th victory in what was their 100th Grand Prix.
Conditions were fine throughout the race, with track temperatures of around 30°C. The fastest lap went to Schumacher with a 1.36.125 on lap 15, a new record for the slightly revised Suzuka circuit.

| M. Schumacher aiming to finish 2002 on a high |
|
| |
Michael Schumacher wants to finish the 2002 FIA Formula One World Championship™ on the top step of the podium this weekend in Japan.
The German, who has already been crowned this year's champion for the fifth time in his Formula One™ racing career, not only loves the Suzuka circuit but also the local cuisine and culture - with sushi apparently coming high on his list of favourite dishes!
On a slightly more serious note, Schumacher is ready to prove that he is more than equal to the unique challenge provided by the figure-of-eight track, a circuit that he has only ever finished on in the top two and one that he feels particularly suits the Ferrari.
"For the drivers it is a challenge," he said. "Things get interesting immediately after the start line and the next five corners are even better. This combination of turns, all slightly uphill, are pretty unique. They are tough on the driver and so, if you get it right, they are exciting!"
However, he does have some bad memories of the event. In 1998 he lost the championship to Mika Hakkinen, after their fight had gone down to the wire at Suzuka, when he was forced to start from the back after stalling on the formation lap grid and then sustained a puncture, putting him into retirement, after he had fought his way up to third.
He is also aware that McLaren took a step forward at the last Grand Prix in Indianapolis and so he cannot take victory at Suzuka for granted, especially with a ferocious Williams determined to make up for their Turn One blunder in the USA, which saw Ralf Schumacher effectively removed from the race and Juan Pablo Montoya relegated to fourth.
Team mate Rubens Barrichello, marginal winner of the last race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, does not have such a record of triumphs in Japan. His best result to date is finishing fourth in the 2000 race, in his debut year for Ferrari. His only other visits to the points here have been fifth in 1993 (for Jordan) and last year.
The Brazilian, however, has appeared to move up a gear this year, with three pole positions and four victories despite a difficult start to the season. Some of his good fortune has been repayment for the help he gave Schumacher on his quest for a fifth title, but it cannot be denied that Barrichello's talent has also come to the fore, in the form of some stunning qualifying sessions and masterful wins, in 2002.
Although technical director Ross Brawn will not be able to attend the race, after continuing problems with his back, the team is still confident that they will supply a structure able to see Rubens Barrichello and Schumacher prosper before the entire grid breaks from racing and testing until the end of November.
Schumacher has won the Japanese GP for the past two years running.

| November debut for 2003 Renault |
|
| |
Renault's 2003 Formula One™ challenger will make its track debut in Spain at the end of next month, the team have revealed.
According to technical director Mike Gascoyne, development work is on schedule and the new car, expected to be called the R203, will make its first track appearance at Valencia in Spain on November 26, the first day of Renault's winter test.
The gearbox for the new car has already been tested on the dyno, while the 2003 spec Renault engine is expected to be ready to run next week. Related electronic and software systems were tested by the team at Silverstone last month.
The first A-spec version of the 2003 car will be used for all testing until the end of February. A B-spec version featuring the latest aerodynamic revisions will then debut in Melbourne for the season opener, the Australian Grand Prix on March 3.
The team hope the new car will bring provide another major step forward following the significant advances made in 2002, the squad's first official season under Renault name.
In 2001, as Benetton, they finished seventh in the constructors' championship with ten points. This year, however, they have regularly been the 'best of the rest' behind Ferrari, Williams and McLaren.
With one round of the 2002 season remaining, Renault have scored 22 points and look almost certain to claim fourth place in the standings.
And though they have not quite made the podium, they have claimed top-six finishes in nine out of 16 races. Among those results, Jarno Trulli and Jenson Button have each taken two fourth places.
While Trulli will remain with the team for 2003, Button leaves to make way for current Renault test driver Fernando Alonso.

| Räikkönen and Stoddart among Bernie winners |
|
| |
The outstanding Formula One™ achievers of last year were on hand to pick up their Bernie Awards at Indianapolis last weekend from circuit boss Tony George and Professor Sid Watkins.
The Awards, moulded in the shape of Bernie Ecclestone, were handed to Michael Schumacher (Driver of the Year), Kimi Raikkonen (Rookie Of The Year), Sir Frank Williams (Lifetime Achievement), Paul Stoddart (Outstanding Contribution to F1™) and Ross Brawn (Technical Excellence).
After two highly successful years at London's Royal Albert Hall, and due to overwhelming demand, F1's 'Academy Awards', The Bernies, will now be staged at the much larger Birmingham NEC Arena, with the 2003 event taking place on Saturday 11th January.
The 2003 F1 Academy Awards form the centre-piece of the Grand Prix Party, the annual night of 'Stars, Cars & Guitars' to raise money for FIA medical delegate Professor Sid Watkins' charity, the Brain & Spine Foundation, and featuring big names from the worlds of music, show business and motorsport.
Having been so well received by fans and the industry alike since their inception in 2001, 'The Bernies' will be extended to ten categories in 2003, and in a further development, winners will now be voted for by an Academy of leading F1 figures including Bernie Ecclestone himself.
Professor Watkins said: "It was fantastic to have all the 2002 Bernie winners together in Indianapolis. Michael was delighted to have won the best driver Bernie for the second year in a row and congratulations to Kimi for making such an impact in his rookie year. Thanks to Tony George for taking the time to help. Bernie and I look forward to an even higher profile 2003 F1 Academy Awards in January."

| Toyota continue 2003 development in Spain |
|
| |
The Toyota test team started a three-day session at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain on Tuesday, with test drivers Ryan Briscoe and Stephane Sarrazin at the wheel.
Briscoe conducted a data acquisition programme on the standard TF102, while Sarrazin gave a second outing to the TF102B, the team's intermediary car, which incorporates next season's RVX-03 engine and a new seven-speed gearbox.
"I am very happy with the work we have done today," said Sarrazin, who completed 58 laps, with a best of 1.20.784. "Our objective was to continue to put more mileage under our belt with the TF102B and to try various aerodynamic elements.
"We went through our programme without any problems and the car felt good to drive. This is a promising start to our three-day test and we will continue working in the same direction tomorrow."
Briscoe, who put in 55 laps with a best of 1.22.008, added: "It has been a positive and trouble-free day for me. We have been conducting an extensive data acquisition programme, which meant I did several series of in and out laps, stopping in between to let the engineers collect information from various parameters on the car.
"We will carry on with the same type of tests tomorrow morning before going back to some longer runs in the afternoon."
Sarrazin and Briscoe will continue driving the TF102B and TF102-04 respectively on Wednesday for the second day of testing at the Barcelona track.

Alex Yoong has returned a changed man to the Grand Prix arena, after an imposed two-race break following his failure to qualify for three Formula One™ races this year.
In Monza he got closer to his team mate Mark Webber than before and raced Jordan's Takuma Sato for position. In the USA Grand Prix he was just seven tenths off Webber's qualifying time despite doing only one timed lap compared to Webber's four.
Yoong's race fastest lap was a 1.15.347 against Webber's 1,15.498, and he was racing strongly when his engine blew up on lap 48 of the 73 lap race.
Minardi team boss Paul Stoddart also declared that the US Grand Prix was his best race ever.
Q: Tell us if you agree with Stoddart, Alex.
AY: Well, Monza was good for me as I enjoyed racing Sato and I was pushing Mark all weekend, and Indy was even better. But I feel there were other weekends during the year where I was quick. What has been satisfying with these last two races is that there is more consistency over the whole weekend and that leaves me more relaxed. And in F1 the more relaxed and confident you get, the quicker you become.
Q: You said that you were down on power during the race. Tell us more.
AY: That was really frustrating because from the very beginning of the race I could tell that the engine was not pulling well down the straight and that ruined any chances of overtaking more cars. So when the engine blew after my pit stop I was not surprised. I can't really complain though as Asiatech's reliability has been great all year and you will occasionally get some blips along the way.
Q: What was it like when Michael came up to lap you with Ralf on tow?
AY: It was a tricky situation. I could see that when it was just Ralf behind me and De la Rosa, that the blue flags were not been shown so I thought that we were racing him. So when Michael came through, I was not going to let the Williams by as well. But when I closed the door on him I still had my doubts and thought 'I sure hope he's not lapping me'. My main concern there was not to slow up Rubens as I thought the Ferrari's were racing for the lead. But after what they did at the finish it looks like they were not racing and maybe next time I'll take my time letting them through.
Q: You only had one timed run in qualifying, what happened?
AY: You mean the off? Well, it was just unfortunate. I had a wheel on the grass and the car just slid off on the grass. It was a very slow corner and had tarmac been there, instead of wet grass, it would not have been a problem. Instead of slowing down the car just kept going and arrived at the barriers. After that you could see that we were comfortably inside the 107% rule. So we decided that there is no real difference between the last few positions and that it was better to save the tyres for the race.
Q: Did you manage to put up a fight with McNish and Panis after your pit stops when they fell back to you?
AY: We had a great pit stop and I came out just behind McNish and in front of Panis. It was a great feeling to be reeling off quicker laps than them, and I was thinking about trying to overtake Alan when the engine blew.
Q: You had a series of greens (fastest sector times) just before you pitted in lap 41.
AY: Yes, when the pit stop window was coming up I pushed for track position and the car was a lot better once there was no fuel in the car.
Q: What would Suzuka (Japanese Grand Prix) in two weeks be like?
AY: Suzuka will be tough. It's a circuit that needs big horse power and lots of downforce, so I think it will be harder to race the others like we were able to in America. There will be a lot of things for me to push for though, as I want to make up for missed opportunities in the last two races and try and be in a position to out qualify Mark there.
Q: Finally, 2003?
AY: Ah 2003. Don't know yet. Could be testing with Minardi or even racing with Minardi. But racing in the States in CART or IRL seemed a distinct possibility also. I'm meeting up with a couple of teams who are interested to run me. In fact I'm visiting one team in Indianapolis today. Minardi have to decide first and then we'll see after Suzuka.

| Head: Montoya must pay more attention |
|
| |
Rising star Juan Pablo Montoya has got to pay more attention to the little details of motor racing if he is to make the most of his massive talent.
That's the opinion of Williams technical director Patrick Head after the Colombian pitted at the wrong time during the United States Grand Prix.
He believes his team had a good chance of pressing Ferrari hard for victory. Montoya read the wrong pit board and caught his team by surprise when he suddenly peeled off the track and into the pits.
"It is a side of his performance that he has got to pay more attention to if he going to make use of that talent that he has as a driver," said Head.
Montoya misread his pit-board and pitted 10 laps too early. But he compounded the mistake by failing to radio the team that he was about to pit.
"Juan imagined something that was never on the pit-board, didn't follow his procedures, didn't communicate to the pits in the way that he is supposed to and decided to come into the pits," added Head.
The penultimate round of the FIA Formula One World Championship™ was not a good one for Williams after Montoya and Ralf Schumacher clashed on the start of the second lap while battling over fourth place.
Schumacher lost control of his car on the inside of Turn One and spun, clipping the other Williams and losing his rear wing.
While the German had to pit for a replacement and ultimately finished out of the points Montoya recovered and went on to finish fourth behind another dominant Ferrari victory and David Coulthard's McLaren third.

The FIA has noted the continuing failure of Orange Arrows to participate in recent Formula 1 Events.
If this failure were due to insolvency, Arrows would lose its rights under the Concorde Agreement. However, at present the FIA has no hard evidence that Arrows' absence is due to insolvency rather than to some other cause.
In the circumstances, the FIA intends to wait until various negotiations and proceedings relating to Arrows have been concluded before considering any formal action.

| Williams register an improvement |
|
| |
”It was a long test in Valencia last week where the test team managed to get through the majority of an extensive test program,” said Sam Michael. “We have tested aero, brake, and suspension parts and tyre compounds for Monaco as well as various engine developments. The test finished with a wet session on Saturday to give Michelin more information on what direction to pursue with intermediate tyres. Marc Gené drove every day for the team while the second car was shared by Antonia Pizzonia and Ralf Schumacher. We are now looking forward to Monaco.”
”As Monaco is clearly not one of the demanding circuits for the engine, this week's test obviously was not focussed on engine development, we just did some fine-tuning,” added Mario Theissen. “The main targets were tyre development and car set-up. We have covered a good mileage and are quite pleased with the results of the test.”

| Alesi : test for Mclaren confirmed |
|
| |
Mclaren Mercedes confirmed that sometime next month Jean Alesi will be testing the Mclaren Mercedes MP4/16. The reason for this session
being the experienced Alesi could give some feedback on Michelin and other components of the Mclaren Mercedes. Jean said "Obviously, I'm looking forward to sitting behind the wheel of an F1 car again and I'm sure that driving a West McLaren Mercedes is going to be an experience.I have no plans to return to F1 competition and am 100 percent committed to my DTM championship challenge with Mercedes- Benz. However a drive in a McLaren was missing from my CV and I'm really looking forward to the challenge".
Martin Whitmarsh , Mclaren managing director said "Jean has extensive F1 experience and we are, therefore, pleased to have this opportunity to benefit from his knowledge.Following the test, Jean will concentrate on his DTM program and we currently have no further plans to test together."
Norbert Haug was also very positive about the test session "Jean Alesi is one of the most popular and experienced drivers in motor racing. When we discussed his Mercedes- Benz DTM involvement we also talked about a chance for Jean to test the West McLaren Mercedes Formula One car.Having spoken with our Partners at McLaren we are glad that the test has now been confirmed. We are convinced that Jean, with his experience of more than 200 Grand's Prix, will give the team some valuable information. After the test Jean will be focusing on the forthcoming DTM season to fight for the Championship in one of the new Mercedes-Benz CLK.”

| Ferrari record at Fiorano on debut ......and Melbourne? |

Ferrari unveiled their 2002 contender late allowing their engineers to work more on the new developments of the car. This proved to be the right move as the new F2002 as soon as it was tested broke the Fiorano track record managing 70 laps with a best of 58:6.
Schumacher `s first impressions where
very promising and the only question now is whether they will start the season with the new F2002 or the previous model. But after yesterday `s
testing at Fiorano with a best of 58:664 seconds. Schumacher has no doubts as after the session he said "It is 99 percent certain I will race at Melbourne with the F2002" and continued "In particular I am surprised how reliable it is. | Schumacher denies "legend" status |
|
| |
Michael Schumacher has stated that he should not be regarded as anything other than a normal person, despite his great success in formula1.
The four times world champion told Spanish sport newspaper AS that he thinks he is simply lucky to be good at something he greatly enjoys
"I am not a legend, just someone who is lucky enough to do well at something that I really enjoy," he said. "I earn more than enough money to live well with my family, but other than that I am just a perfectly normal person."
Schumacher will equal Juan Manuel Fangio's record of five championships if he takes a third consecutive title in 2002, but admitted he would not have wanted to race alongside the Argentinean back in the 1950s. "What Fangio did was impressive, because racing was a lot more dangerous in those days," he said.
However, the German expects a tough time trying to equal Fangio's record this year. "There is now very little difference between the drivers on the grid and all of them are more professional than before," he commented.
"The sport is more exciting than ever and I am looking forward to facing up to the new generation of younger drivers."

| Minardi roll out 2002 contender |
|
| |
Minardi rolled out their new challenger, the PS02, at Imola yesterday (Friday), ahead of its February 23rd launch date.
Alex Yoong completed 20 trouble-free laps at the home of the San Marino Grand Prix in the new car, which features a higher raised nose, reshaped and extended engine cover and higher sidepods.
It was also the first time the outfit had run with its new engine for 2002, the Asiatech AT02 V10.
"I will admit to feeling very excited before getting into the KL Minardi Asiatech PS02 this afternoon," said Yoong. "The team has put a great deal of hard work into the new car, and it shows.
"Today was purely a shakedown, with serious testing beginning in Valencia next week, but even so, it was possible to feel the potential. I was particularly pleased with how comfortable I felt in the cockpit, and am now looking forward to some serious running in Spain."
Team boss Paul Stoddart, was equally upbeat about the new car, which was designed by ex-Prost technical director Loic Bigois. "We're proud and pleased that the new car had a successful debut today," he remarked.
"The initial technical feedback suggests we have made identifiable progress in a number of areas, in particular, the engine and aerodynamic performance.
"It's early days yet, but we believe there is a genuine opportunity for Minardi to achieve its aim of scoring championship points this season.
"We will continue testing through the month of February and look forward with great anticipation to Melbourne, where we will be able to gauge the progress we have made and see if it has put us ahead of some of our rivals."
New-signing Mark Webber, who was announced as the team's second driver earlier this week, is expected to get his first taste of the PS02 at Valencia next week.

| McLaren go it alone in Valencia |
|
| |
McLaren chose to test alone this week in Valencia, while the majority of teams worked at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.
David Coulthard started his test programme with the MP4-17 on Tuesday, and Kimi Raikkonen worked in the MP4-16B test car.
Raikkonen concentrated on a Michelin tyre development while Coulthard carried out engine and chassis work on McLaren's 2002 contender.
By close of play on Wednesday Coulthard had set a time of 1.11.58 in the new car, while Raikkonen managed a 1.11.7 despite concentrating on shorter runs with lighter fuel loads.
However, the Scot had to hand over the reins of the MP4-17 to test driver Alexander Wurz, after he was struck down by a heavy cold.
The Austrian had not been scheduled to test again until 4th February, but flew to the Spanish track to complete a wet test on Thursday, after the track had been artificially flooded for this purpose.
"All the team's drivers and engineers are pleased with the performance of the new car so far," commented McLaren MD Martin Whitmarsh at the end of the test.
McLaren now switch to Barcelona next week, while the rest of the pack flies to Valencia for their test session from February 4th.

Williams' drivers have expressed their disappointment at the FW24 chassis that has been produced for this year, but maintain they are very pleased with BMW's engine.
"I am very impressed by the engine but disappointed by the chassis, as I had expected a lot more from it," Ralf Schumacher said when his test session at Barcelona came to an end this week.
Juan Pablo Montoya has also been somewhat reserved in his opinion of the car. "It (the car) is definitely getting better," he has stated. "It still has oversteer here and understeer there, but the car still has more to come."
There has also been some consternation expressed by team members at the conservative direction taken when designing this year's chassis.
The FW24 is very similar to last year's successful FW23 and was described at the launch as an evolution of its predecessor, thanks to a lack of rule changes for this season. Further aerodynamics and reliability improvements are expected, according to technical director Patrick Head.
Although the drivers are very pleased with their new engine, BMW are alleged to have fallen slightly behind in their production of the P82 this week.
Units believed to have been expected at Barcelona yesterday are rumoured to have failed to arrive on time, and the team is thought to only have one engine left. This was fitted to Antonio Pizzonia's car yesterday (Thursday), after his power pack required changing.
As a result Williams is thought to have cut its work from a three-car to a one-car test. Team sources, however, denied this saying they had planned a one-day test all along.

| Testing February 1st: Barcelona Day 12 |
|
| |
Antonio Pizzonia had his first taste at the top of the time sheets today, when he managed a 1.19.452 in his Williams FW23. He was the only driver for the BMW powered team on track, due to a shortage of engines.
Both Jaguar drivers were at the wheel of this year's R3, and Pedro de la Rosa proved the quicker of the two as they worked on aerodynamics and pit stop practice.
Takuma Sato had a heavy accident in his Jordan EJ11, but was able to get back out on track in the afternoon. However, he had another spin after the car's brake temperature rose rapidly and his rear wheels locked.
Jarno Trulli reinforced his team mate Jenson Button's glowing report on the R202, when he also praised the new car for its consistency and driveability. His time was especially good, considering that he was on a heavy fuel load.
"The whole package is very positive," he said. "At the moment I have a problem with my seat, as my head is hitting the headrest. That has to be corrected. I wasn't so happy in last year's car but even with the headrest problem this car is much improved.
"It is very consistent, it can consistently do the same things over and over again. It can generate more temperature than last year's car (in the tyres). There is a lot more to come on the aero side and the rear end of the car is so stable, so I am very positive and happy about it.
"Realistically it would be nice to be able to fight Sauber for fourth this season, the baseline of the car is there. We have to work on reliability, and I hope we get there!
"I am still finding it hard to get used to the tyres because Michelin have totally different characteristics to Bridgestone, and I just have to change my driving style. It is a matter of time. I really look forward to this season! "
Only Jaguar continue testing tomorrow.

| Ferrari blame driver error for testing accidents |
|
| |
Ferrari has released a statement blaming driver error for the two testing crashes in Barcelona yesterday (Wednesday), which caused the team to cut their session short and head home to Maranello.
Neither driver suffered injury, after Michael Schumacher crashed rear-on at approximately 140 mph at Turn 11 and Rubens Barrichello collided side-on with the barriers at Turn 9 two hours later.
The cars could not be repaired in the pits at the Circuit de Catalunya, and so the entire team packed up and headed home after only one day and a half's work.
Initially neither driver was sure what had caused their crash, but after analysing the data they have conceeded it was their error.
"I'm perfectly alright after the accident," declared Schumacher. "What happened was that I made a mistake and lost control of the car.
"These things happen on a race track. Unfortunately, we cannot continue with the test, as Rubens also had a crash and there are no other cars available here in Barcelona."
Despite the small number of laps completed (17 for Schumacher and 39 for Barrichello,) the two Ferrari drivers were still quickest on the day - with a best time of 1.18.096 for the Brazilian and 1.18.552 for Schumacher.
Luca Badoer has already started a test at Mugello, which has not been affected by the two crashes.

| Lego Joins Forces with Williams |
|
| |
Williams announced today that they have agreed a licensing agreement The LEGO Company.
The three year collaboration is based on the LEGO's Racer products, and will provide children with an educational insight into the engineering, design and experimentation processes used in formula1.
The customisation and adaptation of LEGO Racers to compete in The LEGO Company's fictional competition environment, the Drome, will draw on the real-life engineering practices used in the sport.
Brand Director Stig Blicher commented: "We decided to work together with the Williams as they quickly caught on to the idea about bringing the fascinating world of formula1 into the children's own racing universe.
"Formula1 is all about cutting-edge technology and we think that Williams has one of the most ambitious and serious approaches to racing. They are really world class within their field and known for building race cars, customisation, high-quality performance and best practices.
"These qualities correspond very well with those of The LEGO Company. The learning element and the strong brand recognition are also common features of the two companies."
Jim Wright, Williams Head of Marketing, reflected added: "Following hard on the heels of the launch of the new car last week, the FW24, this association with another global brand of the stature of The LEGO Company is tremendously exciting for all concerned."
Commenting on the new alliance, Sir Frank Williams also said: "I am delighted that we have forged such a prestigious partnership with LEGO Company, a ubiquitous brand name in every corner of the world. The LEGO Racers series is not just fun, but provides serious learning content for children, drawing on the lessons of formula1."
In September 2002, The LEGO Company will launch a Williams Racer to complement the Racer series. The 65-centimetre long model, will be based on the FW24.
