| Head: Montoya must pay more attention |
|
| |
Rising star Juan Pablo Montoya has got to pay more attention to the little details of motor racing if he is to make the most of his massive talent.
That's the opinion of Williams technical director Patrick Head after the Colombian pitted at the wrong time during the United States Grand Prix.
He believes his team had a good chance of pressing Ferrari hard for victory. Montoya read the wrong pit board and caught his team by surprise when he suddenly peeled off the track and into the pits.
"It is a side of his performance that he has got to pay more attention to if he going to make use of that talent that he has as a driver," said Head.
Montoya misread his pit-board and pitted 10 laps too early. But he compounded the mistake by failing to radio the team that he was about to pit.
"Juan imagined something that was never on the pit-board, didn't follow his procedures, didn't communicate to the pits in the way that he is supposed to and decided to come into the pits," added Head.
The penultimate round of the FIA Formula One World Championship™ was not a good one for Williams after Montoya and Ralf Schumacher clashed on the start of the second lap while battling over fourth place.
Schumacher lost control of his car on the inside of Turn One and spun, clipping the other Williams and losing his rear wing.
While the German had to pit for a replacement and ultimately finished out of the points Montoya recovered and went on to finish fourth behind another dominant Ferrari victory and David Coulthard's McLaren third.
